Disney to buy (most of) Fox for 52.4 billion

quote:

In addition to 21st Century Fox's movie studio and regional sports networks, Disney is buying cable channels FX and National Geographic. Disney will also get Fox's stakes in Hulu and European pay-TV provider Sky (SKYAY).

Prior to the deal closing, 21st Century Fox (FOX) will separate the Fox broadcasting network, Fox News Channel, Fox Business Network, and some national sports networks into a new company that will be spun off to its shareholders.

Disney, which counts ESPN among its crown jewels, has suffered as consumers switch off their TVs and spend more hours watching streaming services such as Netflix (NFLX) that are distributed directly to consumers.

The deal allows Disney to expand its content, especially for streaming services. In addition to a majority stake in Hulu that it will have once the deal closes, Disney is preparing to launch two separate streaming services, one for sports and another focusing on entertainment. And it is pulling its content from Netflix in preparation for the launch. Adding Fox's television and movie studios and the content they own means adding to the stable of must-watch content it can offer directly to consumers -- and that streaming competitors can not.

The deal will take almost a year to close and still needs to undergo regulatory review, so it could still get derailed.

Maybe a decent Fantastic Four movie by 2025...?

I might live to see Victor von Doom go up against the Avengers? !@#$ yes.

Also clearly X-men will be the groundwork for a phase 6 or whatever. emoticon

I'm wondering at how this will shake around Marvel's "no mutants" policy in the MCU.

The image of them being snarky and somehow having Wanda or some other reality warping thing (Infinity Gauntlet?) retcon them into existence amuses me.

"Now more mutants."

Things of note:

Both TV shows, Legion and The Gifted are really well made, and has Marvel Television's handling all over it as well.

With exception of New Mutants, X-Men: Dark Phoenix and Deadpool 2... All Fox Marvel productions have been halted. (Including the Gambit movie.)

Despite existing in some nebulous X-Universe, Deadpool actually fits into the Marvel Universe quite well. Better than it fits into the X-Verses. (For that matter, same with Legion and Gifted.)

On the heels of going out of their way to avoid using anything that may be Fantastic Four related, not only did we have the Watchers in Guardians 2, but the Skrulls, originally declared off limits as told by Joss Whedon in Avengers, because he wanted to use them but couldn't... Are being used in Captain Marvel. Ben Mendelsohn plays the leader of the Skrulls.

Despite avoiding using mutants like crazy, and going through loops to give a new origin for Wanda and Pietro. They introduced Molly (a mutant) in Runaways... Who's powers manifested themselves during puberty. (When she was dealing with her first period.)

After YEARS of treating the X-Men and the Fantastic Four like redheaded step children, and shoving the Inhumans down our throats, Marvel Comics recently put a serious new push with the X-Books... And they're actually GOOD! (As well as a recent return of Valeria and Franklin, and even Johnny and Ben.) And the Inhumans show (which sucked) was delegated to a Friday night timeslot with almost NO fanfare or advertising. The returns of the fifth season of Agents of Shield was bigger hype.

Originally pitched that Infinity War was going to be a two parter, then suddenly out of nowhere, the second movie loses it's title, and they're guarding that title like crazy. I mean, there's not even a hint and Feige and company won't say !@#$ about Phase 4, other than Guardians 3.

And ALL of that went on before the Fox buyout rumors happened.

My theory?

I not only think that this has been in the works for years, that buyout or not, a cooperation was going to happen. I'm probably way off and crazy, but I strongly believe that the fourth Avengers movie is going to be Avengers vs. X-Men.
