Mega Man Lives!

It's not Universe (yes, I'm still bitter that got cancelled, and no I won't let it go emoticon), but a true MM sequel? I'm intrigued.

Please don't end up like Mighty No 9, please don't end up like Mighty No. 9... Also, all the X games are getting rereleased.

X games getting re-released astounds me. I thought Capcom had wanted that dead and buried after the Zero games ended.

And Mega Man 11 isn't a purposefully ugly NES level sprite nostalgia wankfest, so color me intrigued. :D

(Yes, yes, sprite work ages better than polygons, but it's nearly 2018. MM fans of NES graphics can at least update it to SNES graphics.)

I LOVE Sprite art. I have NO IDEA why we need to stick to NES era sprite art. You could do like Disney levels of fluidity in animation on a modern machine pushing sprites (Ie, look at Cuphead!). That i'm on board with.

I wouldn't consider Cuphead to be sprite art. The point things are at now, you basically do full on hand drawn animation and import it at high res into the game. Sprite art is deliberately low res and built by filling in a pixel at a time, like making a Mario Paint stamp.

Still, yes. We can certainly move the bar forward to more than what you could do by stacking 8x16 3-color sprites on top of each other while trying to stay short of having more than 8 sprites at a time on a single scan line.

Re: Mega Man Lives!

So I’ve spent half the morning just watching people’s reactions to MM11. The trailer is so devilish, building the hype, getting people excited as they recount all the games in the history of the franchise, & then seemingly being nothing but a tribute video. The fans in nearly every reaction vid I’ve seen have a moment where they get deflated & resign themselves to the fact that Capcom’s just announcing another compilation of old games (at best) or nothing at all.
But then the trailer keeps going & they see that 2018 marker & then it’s just pure freak out. People gushing, almost in tears, in total disbelief; it’s like they’re meeting an old friend that they haven’t seen since childhood & it’s great just to see the level of enthusiasm & love fans still have for the series & the character.

It did occur to me that we wouldn’t be seeing these extreme reactions if it weren’t for the fact that Capcom had been letting the character rest for 7 years (8 by the time the game comes out). So it’s great to see these extreme reactions, but I do hope that they don’t make us wait another 8 years between games. :D

Re: Mega Man Lives!

Just began replaying the entire series, starting with the 1987 original. Unfortunately (or maybe not so unfortunately), I’m playing on the MM Anniversary Collection on the PS2. You know, the version where they took out the elec beam glitch. I can’t kill the Yellow Devil with a single hit! I’ve beaten this version before, but it’s been a while. Got my butt stomped a few times. But the only way to do it is the hard way, so that’s what I’m gonna do!

PS- I rebought the MM2 NES cartridge, because the Anniversary version screwed it up so much. Gotta play the real version of that one.

PART 1 CONT.

Took me around 5 or 6 more tries, but finally got good enough at the Yellow Devil’s pattern to beat it without using the elec beam glitch. And then went on to smoke the rest of the game.

I think my old PS2 controller is in bad shape, because there were a couple times (during boss fights even) that Megaman started running to the right & wouldn’t stop. Found out that switching to the analog would snap him out of it, but that’s not something you want to have happen when you’re hanging on by a shred of life. I’d have to really mash the pause button to bring up the pause screen, so even if the elec beam trick worked, I wouldn’t have been able to do it. A couple times the shoulder buttons & regular weapon button didn’t want to work. Just bizarre, because it only happened a few times. But it was enough to drive me crazy. Gonna swap controllers when I do the next one.

After beating it, I looked up a couple No-damage boss runs & couldn’t believe what I saw. Some clever patterns that I never knew about. Frickin’ Fire Man was behaving in a way I’ve never seen before!! Gotta try it soon. I’ve never been able to beat that guy without taking damage.

While I was getting trashed, I was just thinking, “this is what they mean by Nintendo hard,” lol.

I do like that the boss rematches with Cutman & Elecman took place in within Wily level 2 instead of the usual boss rematch room of all the other sequels. Like, I think it’s better that you can choose which order to do them in, but it’s just one of those things unique to part 1.

Anyway, onto part 2!

I remember beating Yellow Devil on the Anniversary Collection. Boy, is he a pain in the ass when you can't cheat.

What was it the Anniversary Collection screwed up about MM2? My buddy and I beat all the games on that back when it came out, but I can't remember any changes other than the fact I was playing on GCN with the god damn buttons backwards.

Some levels have remixed tunes, while others don’t. And the end-credit music starts in the middle. It’s just kinda not cool. Little things that irritate me.

One nice thing though, is that they make use of the shoulder buttons to switch weapons like MMX. So it’s not all bad news. And all the other games on the disc seem unchanged. At least I think they are- it has been a while since I played the later ones.

I wish the Legacy Collection came out for the Wii U. I’d love to see the games looking even more crisp & sharp than what’s possible with a coax cable.

Part 2 beat!
This was the first Megaman game I ever played, the one I play the most, & as a result it’s the easiest one for me. Still hella awesome though. Love this game. It’s nearly a perfect game with only a couple drawbacks (literally just 2):

1. The weapon-get screen, when Dr Light shows up to give you an item. My god it drags on forever! And you can’t skip the text or cancel it out. You just have to sit there or to make a sandwich while it takes forever to do its thing.

2. The Metal Blade. I love this weapon, but it is ungodly overpowered. Not only can it fire in all directions, but it consumes barely any energy, & it wrecks at least 4 of the regular robot masters with ease (Metalman, Bubbleman, Flashman, & Woodman).

I did find out for the first time ever that crash bombs are great against Quickman & a fully charged atomic heat shot will destroy Wily’s first ship in a single hit. So that was cool. Still finding out new things.

Onto part 3!
