ToyHax "Labels for TR Windblade" 3rd Party Stickers Review

As most people probably realize by now, I've been a big fan of Windblade since her inception as a fan-made bot in the Generations line; having all of the different versions of her, including 3rd party versions.

Speaking of 3rd party items; that's exactly what this review is about. Her newest form is the in the "Titans Return" line, as a Titan Master; and for this a company called ToyHax created a sticker sheet for her. So, this is the ToyHax "Labels for TR Windblade" review:

In package:

Image

To start off with, this review is not about Windblade herself (which I've already covered here: http://bdeinonychusden.runboard.com/t18917, but rather the sticker sheet itself.

To call is a package is just saying that they shipped it in a standard envelope. No surprise there; it's to be expected. (I did cover up my address on the envelope though, for obvious reasons).

Cards:

The stickers come packaged between two hard, thin cards; showing some ads and applications for ToyHax stickers.

The Stickers:

Image

The stickers come in a small plastic bag, from between the two aforementioned cards.

Image

From inside that, there are 2 sets of stickers: 1 main sheet and 1 smaller sheet. The smaller sheet has all of the legal disclaimers on it as well as 2 Autobot stickers (more on those later).

Instructions:

As it turns out, there are no instructions included; surprisingly!

Instead, the instructions are the images on their website: https://toyhax.com/for-titans-ret/2379-labels-for-tr-windblade.html (in this case, TR Windblade's page).

I really don't like that, but not for the obvious reasons. It's not because they aren't included physically with the stickers mailed to me; but rather because the images are embedded into the website and can't be opened separately (at least without looking into the source code):

Once you look at the images; it's easy to tell where all of the stickers go (except for the Autobot symbols; which actually go over the existing one on her robot mode as well as an unmarked place on her vehicle mode nosecone).

Robot Mode Comparison:

Applying the stickers isn't too difficult, if you're used to doing things like that (I personally have made model kits before, so I had the tools and know-how to do it easily). For a beginner though; it might be hard to do.

As for the appearance; the robot mode looks quite different. There are a lot of noticeable changes; such at the wings, legs, arms and stomach. The Autobot symbol also gets larger with the new sticker as well.

Image

From the back there aren't as many changes; mainly the wings. There are 4 stickers on the rotors (2 on each), but they are only on one side; so they just have to be flipped around in each mode in order to show.

Vehicle Mode Comparison:

Image

For the vehicle mode, there aren't too many changes. The only main changes are 2 stickers above the air-intakes on the front of the jet nosecone. There are stickers on the sides of the back of the jet and rear tail-fins, but there are harder to notice.

Image

The only stickers that can't be noticed from the front are two on the rear of the jet, for the jet exhaust.

Customization:

While the stickers were pretty extensive; they did leave a little something to be desired in some areas. So I went and used parts of the leftover sticker sheet in order to slightly customize Windblade more:

Image

In Robot Mode, I simply added some silver on the kneecaps. I would have preferred blue, but there wasn't enough left on the sheet to do it.

Image

For the Jet Mode, I did 3 changes: Silver for the air intakes, black areas connecting the wing design to the cockpit design and a silver deco on the jet top. The kneecap changes are still visible in jet mode, though.

Overall:

Well, there are pros and cons to this set.

The pros would be that the quality of the stickers seems to be good...not sure how they will hold up in the long term, of course, but they seem good so far. Application was a bit tedious just because of how precisely the stickers had to be applied, but in the end it wasn't so difficult that the stickers tore or got damaged.

Cons are that, while extensive, the stickers weren't quite enough (at least for my tastes). Also the blue that they used isn't the same blue as already on Windblade...they should have either made their blue darker to match or made new, brighter blue stickers to cover the already blue areas on Windblade and her Titan Master (the latter option being the better choice). Also they could have included 4 more rotor stickers so the rotors don't have to be flipped between modes; and also the website could have had the images open in a new tab for easier viewing.

So, for me personally...it's not bad. The change is going to take some getting used to, especially the wing designs; but it doesn't look bad either. Just something new and needs some adjusting to.

Overall I'd say that this was worth it, especially because the site has a special sale on the stickers right now for only 1 cent! For 1 penny; I couldn't pass it up! emoticon

I used their (ReproLabels) stickers a while back to make my DragonZord look more screen accurate and get rid of those stupid lightning bolt symbols they put everywhere. They seem to be holding up pretty well, probably better than any factory applied foil stickers.

My only issue with ReproLabels/ToyHax is that I wish they gave options other than foil stickers. Like, if they could print the same designs as waterslides for those of us who know how to work with them. Yes, they're harder to apply, but they are a lot more permanent. Especially if you seal them in with a clear coat. They also come out looking like they were painted on since the edge of the decal completely vanishes.
