Toys R Us files chapter 11

They're the #2 toy seller behind Amazon and $5 billion in debt, but they seem to have a plan to reinvent themselves. I'd expect store closings next year after the holidays. Hopefully they can figure it out because not having an actual toy store would suck. I still miss Child World and Kay*Bee.

Children's Palace was the bomb. That place was awesome.

I miss the Circus World store in the mall near where I lived at the time. They had great deals on classic Joes until they got bought out by KB.

I know Hasbro wasn't planning on scaling back stock to TRU pre-bankruptcy, but I wonder what this means for any future potential TRU exclusives.

Well, last time Hasbro had an exclusive for a store, in the last one's case, it was Kay-Bee, they went to BBTS.

Am I the only one who feels like buying toys on Amazon is a terrible experience? Half the time the only ones you can find are from marketplace scalpers. I buy all my !@#$ from BBTS if I'm going to buy it at all.

I mostly just keep an eye out for who's selling it. I just got Octane, Blitzwing, and Seaspray directly from Amazon with no issues. Trypticon's up there at normal, non-scalpers price.

The one thing I *have* noticed is that Amazon's stock of stuff can lag behind BBTS by a significant margin of time. Also, there are toys (Nitro, the TR Voyager Prime and Megs) that I've never actually seen come up on Amazon from non 3rd-party sellers.

Basically, when Amazon has stock, it works more smoothly than BBTS in my experience (since I have Prime) but sometimes it doesn't. Kind of half and half.

Still not as bad as TRU's online shopping was, though, with "in stock near you (except we mean it's in the same state, maybe on the other side of said state) but no, you can't order it online to ship right to you."

For the longest time, I refused to buy anymore TFs from Amazon because they shipped my FoC Kickback in a bag and it arrived crushed to hell and I was afraid it would happen again. Toy was fine and Amazon let me keep it and refunded my money though. Im not the MISBer I used to be, but I still dont like crushed packaging.

But, I'm willing to try Amazon again though if I can find something there I need without marketplace markup or a cool exclusive. But if it happens again, Im leaving a turd for OM's pillowcase. emoticon

Toys “R” Us Inc., which filed for bankruptcy in September, is considering closing at least 100 U.S. stores in the face of weak holiday sales, according to people with knowledge of the situation.

U.S. sales have declined about 15 percent this Christmas-shopping season from a year earlier, according to people recently briefed on the matter, who asked not to be identified because the information isn’t public. The number of closed stores could reach approximately 200, one of the people said, but no decision has been made.

“Final decisions about our real estate portfolio will be done only after careful consideration about the best interests of our business,” said spokeswoman Amy von Walter. “Any speculation on that figure is premature and likely to be inaccurate.”

The Wayne, New Jersey-based company operated 879 U.S. stores as of the end of January, according to its last annual report.

The prospect of Toys “R” Us closing locations deals another potential blow to its biggest suppliers, Mattel Inc. and Hasbro Inc. Shares of both companies fell to session lows on Monday. Mattel declined as much as 4.5 percent to $14.78, while Hasbro dropped 3.2 percent to $91.02.

The toymakers have already blamed Toys “R” Us’s bankruptcy for hurting results. Mattel, the maker of Barbie and Fisher-Price, has been particularly hard hit, with sales plunging in North America last quarter.

Hmn.

Y'know, the TRU by me is in a plaza next to the local mall. In that plaza are various other retail buildings like the Home Depot, a bank, a Culver's...but there are a BUNCH of empty stores that used to be a K-Mart, the Office Max my brother used to work at, and a couple that I don't think I ever knew the name of.

I don't buy toys that much anymore, for various reasons, but I'd hate for that TRU to fade away like the other businesses nearby.

...

Unrelated note, there's still a K-Mart closer to the house, in the same plaza as the store I used to work at, and Office Max got absorbed by Office Depot, and there's one of THOSE across the street from the mall, near the Best Buy. I don't know why I mentioned that, but I did.

I feel like this is as much an issue of the changing market as it is of online retail. Kids just aren't as interested in toys anymore. Really little ones are, but they grow out of it quick and only care about electronics and video games. We can bemoan it like the crotchety old farts we are, but it is what it is.

I think the toy companies know it too, which is why you see all these toy lines aimed at adult collectors. Even the TF Generations line is really aimed at us, even if it's sold at mass retail. Does a 6 year old have interest in a Legends-class Cosmos? Probably not, but I sure as !@#$ do.
