Doomsday Clock

Geoff Johns is apparently working with Gary Frank on a mini (between 7-12 issues) that seems to involve Superman and Dr. Manhattan. Partially instigated by the current U.S. President. Allegedly won't have a bunch of tie-ins.

More info on the story and John's hypocrisy here..

Don't care. After they canceled everything I was reading out of the Nu52, I was done. Rebirth sounds like a confusing mess. They had a chance to make a clean slate and they're still hanging onto garbage like Identity Crisis. Now bringing Watchmen into some kind of shared continuity? Ill-advised.

Yeah, that's been kind of my feeling, too.

I've read comments saying DC's been markedly improved since Rebirth (but they're saying that about 'Tec, written by a guy who decided the characters he "loves" needed lower standards in allies and less competence). Action has been good, and even their "merging" of pre- and post-Flashpoint Supes' history has thus far been...not awful. They recently had a two-parter where Clark senses something off, and has Kelex tell him his life story. They even acknowledge the trunks! Sadly they acknowledge his initial New52 suit, but other than that and the still-dead Kents, I don't see much else they kept from Flashpoint...so far.

Can't speak for other titles, though. Zechs, at the Outhouse, has told me all that pre52 stuff "still happened", just not remembered yet, but that doesn't mesh with Cassie's Dad still being what he was remade, and Harper Row apparently being her bestest buddy evers...

I've read people that are jazzed about involving Watchmen, insisting it's clever, sharp, a great idea and such. But I find it so hard to believe after the past 5 and a half years. Then again, if the next issue of 'Tec tossed everything Flashpoint related out the window concerning the characters, and got a better writer than Tynion (it's not just his lousy version of Cassie that's the problem), then I'd be buying it in a heartbeat.

I know I'm usually the guy who's like all, "Oh hey, give it a chance!" But as a guy who HAS been reading it since Rebirth, and was pissed off that they were getting rid of most of my favorite books from that DC You Nonsense...

This has seriously fixed a lot of !@#$. The stuff that we were all pissed off about, is fixed. People say it's confusing, but it's really, REALLY not. If you were able to follow Infinite Crisis and all that jazz... This is so easy to follow.

Sure Batman still has his Nu52 nonsense... But I blame Scott Snyder for that. And I stopped reading after the Death of the Family years ago, so I can't tell you !@#$ what's happening.

But Superman has been seriously improved to being one of my favorite books I buy every week now. They recently recapped his history... And basically, it's "What Nu52 Superman and Lois?" The relationship between Jon Kent and Damian Wayne is adorable and awesome as all hell. It's the epitome of Superman, all over again. (And how did they fix him? A pissed off Mxyzptlk who was pissed off that Clark didn't come looking for him to for their usual 90 day fun times.)

Lobo is back to being Lobo. Not the tight pants tart they were calling him. Supergirl is basically no longer that angry teen from Krypton, but... Well, essentially the show. (Being allowed to, you know... Use Superman regularly.) Nightwing is back to being in blue and acting lovable again. Wonder Woman is awesome again, and wearing a normal WW costume. The Birds of Prey are back to normal. The Titans are much better, Captain Atom is on the way back to normal...

Everything is just... Better. It's more like the Post Crisis, Pre52 era than it really ever was. And this whole Watchmen mystery? it's surprisingly... Engaging. I actually want to know what happened. Right now, all the clues are pointing toward Dr. Manhattan altering the universe, but seriously, I'm calling a total red herring there.

I understand why you guys are hesitant, but it's actually good. Hell, Batgirl and Deathstroke (DEATHSTROKE?!?) have been nominated for Eisners!

You know how usually either Marvel sucks and DC is good, or it's Vice Versa? If Marvel can get it's head out of it's ass with Secret Empire, for the first time since the late 80s... BOTH companies will be great again.

I never thought that some of my favorite comics would be Superman comics.

The Batman stuff has been hit-or-miss. I really liked the initial All-Star Batman story, but it's been kind of flat since. The main title seems to alternate between good and forgettable arcs, but I'm getting quite fond of Duke.

With Deathstroke I vacillate between ambivalence and boredom, but I've been a little upset with Slade since he did what he did to that dog recently.

Birds of Prey and Batgirl lost me early along with Supergirl. Justice League has been lackluster and Flash has been okay. And while it probably doesn't count per-se, I've been quite enjoying Doom Patrol.

Point is, I'm actually reading more DC titles now than I ever have at one time.

Hey man, I've been enjoying the !@#$ outta Shade: The Changing Girl.

I understand Birds of Prey, and to be honest... I'm only buying it because it's where I get my regular Black Canary fix. But I only read a few issues of Batgirl and I was kinda meh about it.

I'm getting DC again, and while there were some messy bits, and I'm not entirely happy about what they did with Nu52 Superman... I adore having my Lois and Clark back, and their new status quo is great. Jon is great.

So to completely hijack this into a "the new Superman series is awesome" thread, here's a little something. Each month I build my Wife a new LEGO calendar with a unique theme. This was January this year;

I want LEGO to make an actual official Minifig of Jon now.

I'll grant that other titles might be doing better. I know Action is good; it's the only DC title I get anymore. Maybe Green Lantern is great for the GL fans, Wonder Woman is doing the same for those readers, and perhaps the Watchmen crap won't be the comic book equivalent of those DTV Mockbuster films.

But dammit, 'Tec still (literally) infuriates me. I see none of these improvements whenever I read a preview for it. It's not a matter of "Cass is a little different", she's A LOT different. Aside from some low-hanging-fruit (liking ballet), there's nothing new, and a couple of similarities (compassion and some ass-kicking, taken overboard recently where she takes on what looks like an entire nation of evil ninjas and wins, which...I love Cass, but come on, you're clearly trying too hard)...this character is unpleasantly different. According to a friend on Twitter, Harper is still her best friend (WHY? She's a narcissistic snot that never really struggles or earns anything, and is more concerned with praise), and her origin is still the Eternal one, where her Dad never loved her but she took his "Orphan" name because...I have no freakin' clue. Idiocy, I suppose. So the claim that her previous origin/life "still happened" is utter nonsense.

Seriously, how can Tynion "love" a character, then change almost everything about them? It's not just him making the claim, I made a snarky reply to Scott Snyder's tweet about Metal some weeks back, he replied through private messaging, and in the exchange he said "no one loves these characters more than Jim". Right. Unfortunately, I'm not seeing it. Also, "Harper's not even a cape anymore", which...how does that make it better, I wonder? The damage is done, the damage remains. Harper is the reason the reinvented Cass (and Steph) are so lousy. She couldn't stand on her own as a character, so others had to be torn down. Tim's an idiot, Steph's an idiot that let people die for Daddy Issues, and Cass's entire existence begins and ends with an entitled brat that could be recognized more easily out of costume than Clark Kent if he walked out without his glasses.

At least when Cass was turned evil, it was EVENTUALLY undone. But it doesn't look like Tynion is cleaning this mistake up anytime soon. I honestly don't see how any fan of Cass (or Steph, or Tim) can read this !@#$, with a few visual references and nods to what came before the Flashpoint blunder, and think it's the same. I just don't see the redeeming elements, when by all appearances, Tynion hasn't improved. I can only think that maybe they've been so starved of these characters because of DC's usual incompetent authority figures, that they'll take whatever they can get and/or will support the characters just so they don't get taken away again.

I know I harp on this a lot. If anyone's made it through this post all the way, they did so rolling their eyes more than a few times per paragraph...okay, sentence. But damnations...I'm not the problem. Why in Hell's blazing bells should I leave? What also concerns me is, given how similar some of the elements in Tynion's stuff has been to my own ideas, it doesn't fill me a with a great deal of self-confidence when his executions are so damned poor. It leaves a lingering feeling in the back of my skull that maybe I'm just as shitty as he is, and in the off-chance I did get to write these characters, my attempts would be just as paltry.

Ugh...I need something to cheer me up.
