I know it's not exactly the same but I dealt with panic attacks and anxiety back about 10 years ago and it was so bad I ended up dropping out for a semester in college and quitting my teaching aid job that year. It took a while and I even saw a counselor (might sound like a waste of time to some but seeing a counselor works) but luckily I was able to get it under control enough to get back on my feet. People still think it's all in someone's head but I know for a fact it's not. :(
