Nintendo to rerelease the NES

Miniaturized with 30 built-in games.

AND it's HDMI-compatible. AND it'll be compatible with Wii/WiiU controllers. AND the games now have savepoints.

for sixty bucks.

Well, the NX is certainly a new way to play games emoticon

Kidding aside, this thing is great. An OFFICIAL NES emulator/SOAC means it should be perfect emulation, with HDMI support. Here's hoping that it'll allow for expansion to other games in some fashion - the pseudo cart slot definitely looks like it opens up, so there's potential for an SD cart slot there.

Edit:

Nevermind, that's too forward thinking for Nintendo. Silly me.

Still, that cart slot CLEARLY was molded to open initially, you can see the tab on the ridge of it. Weird.

I have an NES... and a Famicom... and an FDS... and at least one version of most of those games. So this isn't really aimed at me. It's a great solution for people who want to relive a few classics with a quick plug-n-play system though.

I thought this was a pretty cool idea up until I read where there is no slot for external media or even any internet connectivity to expand on the games already pre-loaded (which in and of itself is a pretty awesome selection with games ranging from action to puzzle to roleplay).

However, that being said, I agree with Trium that it's a great system for those who want to relive older games or maybe a younger fan who is developing a taste for vintage game play. For the price, $59.99 might seem steep for a vintage system of any kind but even if you buy one of those multi platform 3P systems, just trying to track down a big portion of some of those games individually would be definitely run you more than $60.

It makes a lot more sense if you think of it as a software bundle. Physical copies of a lot of these games are kind of expensive not because they're rare, but because they're popular. Contra is like $40, SMB3 like $30. Even on the virtual console they charge $5 a pop, so you're looking at $150 there. In those terms, it's a great deal for the software, and the console itself is a gimme.

Re: Nintendo to rerelease the NES

I finally managed to track down one of these little bastards thanks to a tip from a friend on Facebook. I was getting a little...ALOT....pissed after hearing Nintendo stopped production even though demand is still quite high. Besides the one I got the other day, I had never seen a single NES Classic on a shelf. I hope they beef up production on the rumored SNES Classic so people dont have to do this !@#$ again.

That being said, I can't stop playing. I love the idea of plugging in a game and playing without worrying about online access. DLC be damned! :lol I can't remember the picture being this clear and love the save point feature on the system without remembering pass codes. Ive actually spent the majority of time playing Punch Out but Ive also tried out Castlevania (those Medusa heads SUCK!!). Just wish I had the controller cord extension or a 3P wireless controller.

There's an option in the Classic (I can't remember if it's the default setting) called something like "pixel perfect mode" that is effectively running the developer kit version of the games (ie the programming test hardware not the retail original NES hardware), which makes them look amazing, plus Nintendo doing a really good job on the upscaler.

As for your controller issue, hunt yourself down a Wii/Wii U wired pad. The Classic uses the same connector (the system recognizes them no problem) and those are much easier to find and they're often more comfortable as well.

I dug out my old original Wii Pro Controller to use with mine. As much as I love the NES, the controller's not...super comfortable anymore.

I half expect it to have a somewhat different games library, because Nintendo. :lol
