Seraph talks about MGS:V The Phantom Pain. (warning, spoilers)

So after finishing MGS:V (Completing the main story and only needing to do a few side missions) I feel this fills some of the plot holes Kojima left/hastily tried to fill in MGS4 (The game that everyone wishes wasn't canon)

I'll be talking more about the characters than the plot, because as always in a MGS game, Kojima puts a ton of work into the characters :P

First we start with Punish (Venom) Snake... aka the Medic from Ground Zeros

That's right, we are not big boss, but his "phantom", one of Big Bosses best soldiers, made to look like him as part of Zero's plan to keep Snake safe.

This wasn't to big of a plot twist for me because the Phantom looks close to Big Boss, but there are many give aways that it wasn't him, the biggest one is the Phantom still has his right eye. (Boss lost his when the muzzle flash of Revolvers gun went off next to it, burning a good chunk of the eye out)

Beyond this... not much to this guy, he rarely talks, the "Horn" Shrapnel in his head causes him to suffer colorblindness after a good hit to the nogging, but he feels more like the Master Chief a semi mute protagonist.

Next up, Kaz Miller.

Man Kaz, I never played MG2, but I hope you wern't a whiny paranoid !@#$ in that.

Yes, I know you lost a Foot, your right arm and your eyesight, but you are the poster child why Revenge is bad, cuz it made you one of the least interesting characters in the game.

Revolver "Shalashaska" Ocerlot.

!@#$, this guy is a walking, talking Xanatos speed roulette. one of the founders of Cipher. (the group that mutated into the Patriots) and one of the few that actually got to talk to Zero, if I had to guess anything about his end goal, it was to destroy the philosophers Legacy, the supper fund from world war 2, because nearly every bad thing in the MGS universe can be traces back to the 200 billion dollars set up by by Russia, China and the US.

He also plays the voice of reason to Kaz's Paranoia, which is an interesting angle, he seems to be speaking the truth about... 70% of the time? Which is more than he did in other MGS games :P

Huey Emeric.

.... !@#$, this guy is probably what inspired me to write this. He is possibly the worst human being in the game, more so that the villain Skullface (I'll get to that monster later)

As we know from MGS 2, Huey comitted suicide by drowning in his poll (Why a guy in a wheelchair would even own a pool, who knows) and we felt bad for him.

This game makes you think the !@#$ got off lightly.

His list of crimes are as following.

He sold Boss and crew out to Cipher, using a nuclear inspection team as a cover in Ground Zero's, this resulted in Mother Base being destroyed, Snake and the Medic being put in a coma and Chico, the spunky kid from MGS Peace Walker, dying.

He then worked for Cipher to make a Metal Gear, using notes from Gulucovich and Data he stole from his wife, Dr Strangelove. To test the new MG, he shoved his 4 year old son in it.... when Strangelove found out, she sent Hal away to be safe.... so Huey shoved her in a AI pod, where she suffocated and died.

But his !@#$ does not end there, he then tried to sell out cipher to rejoin Big Boss, then after joining Boss, told a bunch of child soldiers how to repair the Metal Gear, Sabotaged some medical equipment leading to an outbreak of a highly infectious parasite that forced Boss to gun down his own men and tried to sell Boss out to Cipher AGAIN!

All the time, making up half ass lies and saying he's innocent, even when the proof of his actions are staring him in the face.

For his crimes, we kick him out and Ocelot says. "No one can run from their phantoms forever."

I guess those phantoms caught up in the end...

Now for, Quite, a Sniper deprived of her words.

Originally, I didn't care for her, a mute semi naked woman, in most games, that would be the end of her character.

Well I was happily proven wrong about her by Kojima. emoticon

Originally sent to kill Snakes Phantom (Zero did a hell of a job making everyone think it was the real snake) She got lit on fire by the real snake and fell out of a 5th floor window.

near dead, her lungs burnt out along with most of her guts, Skullface gave her several Parasites (The super power McGuffin of this game) harvested from the Corpses of the Cobras. They gave her photosynthesis, allowed her to breath again, gave her an organic form of optic camouflage and the ability to phase through some some items.

The half naked part is because she breaths through her skin, if she wears to many clothes, it stops her skin from breathing and she starts to suffocate and loses all her powers.

As to why she can't speak? one of the Parasites Skullface gave her starts to breed in reaction to certain languages and it's larva eat human lungs, wish cause the victim to cough up, spreading the Larva to new hosts.... and the Language that triggers the Quite's parasite?

English.

!@#$ Kojima, just !@#$ man.

Stay tune to my next post where I talk about Code Talker, the researcher behind the parasites, Eli, aka Liquid Snake, the Man on fire and the Third Boy and Skullface, the man who's actions started the birth of The Patriot system.

Re: Seraph talks about MGS:V The Phantom Pain. (warning, spoilers)

So, with only one main mission left to play (Take down the Metal Gear on Extreme) time to finish this :P

Let's start with the Navajo Indian, Code Talker.

This guy was one of the people who helped with the code in WW2, but turned his mind to science in an attempt to save his people from the fall outs of Uranium mining.

He found a form of parasite (which at this point, I think Kojima is using Parasite the same way he used Nanomachines in MGS4) which ate Uranium, turning it into useless slag, the problem was that no one wanted to fund something that would mess with Nukes on the grounds that some one else might use it on them.

Enter Skullface, who not only offered funding, but was willing to give Code talker the remains of the Cobra Unit, in return, all Code talker had to do was research the vocal cord parasite.

Bitter with how America had treated his people, he agreed, taking some of the Parasites from The End's body to help prolong his own life, he started working on a parasite that would react to certain languages.

But Skullface wasn't happy when Code talker started to get cold feet about using the Parasites, so he started blackmailing him for info, by threatening to give the English strain of the Parasite to Code Talkers tribe, and give how much the English language had spread in his tribe, he gave over the info.

When Snake brings Code talker to Motherbase, he dedicates the rest of his life to undoing the evil of Skullface and trying to find some way to use his research for good.

Next up, Eli... aka, Liquid Snake.

Created as part of the Les infant terible experiment, (clones of big boss) he was one of three clones, the others being David (Solid Snake) and George (Solidus Snake) while traveling through Africa, he managed to escape Cipher and set him self up as a warlord, leading child soldiers.

The thing is... his army of kiddies was so good, they where forcing out Harden Mercs and trained military, so Snake has to go in and stop the little !@#$.

Boss seems to feel something for Eli, but Eli is still all angry about the whole "recessive gene" thing, not knowing that he was made using dominate genes (the gene stuff in the MGS universe is messed)

Eventually, using an accident that killed one of the kids on Motherbase as a smoke screen, he managed to rally the kids, fix and steal metal gear and bugger off to... well, a part of the game that Konami is apparently not gona give us....

Bugger :(

The Burning Man and the Third Child.

Burning man is a near brain dead Col Volgen, who only has one thing left in his mind, Hatred, an burning desier for vengance against Snake.

I wish there was some more info on him, like why he is a flaming demon man that can absorb anything shot at him and bounce it back, but there was nothing said about that.

The third child on the other hand, is young Psycho Mantis and damn he is a powerhouse (which explains why he has all those scars on his head in MGS, the Russians nerfed him to make him more controllable.) His Young mind is is drawn to minds filled with rage and hatred like a moth to a flame, Starting with the Burning man, then Skull Face before finally locking on to Eli's.

So Mantis and Liquid have been good buds for a looooong time. emoticon.

Now for the monster that is.... Skullface.

Horribly burnt as a child, he lost everything, his home, his family, his face and his language. He grew up to become Big Boss's clean up crew, (it's how he got his hands on the remains of the Cobras.) and became a part of Cipher due to the fact he worked for Zero.

Eventually, using the fact Zero had all but isolated himself, he was able to get enough of the Philosophers Legacy to create XOF, his own private military, start research on the Parasites as a bio weapon and start work on his own Metal Gear.

Knowing his only two things that stood in his way where Zero and Big Boss, He first faked a nuclear inspection team to attack the first motherbase and put Boss into a coma, then tried to kill Zero.

He failed in Killing Zero, but did manage to turn him into the drooling vegetable that you see in the end of MGS4 and with Zero out of the picture, Donald Anderson (Head of DARPA) Dr Clark (Paramedic, the founder of the gene soilders and head of the big boss cloning) where the only founding members of Cipher left, and given that due to failing heath before hand, Cipher was now run by Anderson.

Skullface had 2 goals, one was to become a nuclear power by selling nukes(using a variation of the uranium eating parasite that ate depleted uranium and shat out weapons grade uranium to make a !@#$ ton of nukes.) and metal Gears and to perfect the Vocal cord parasites to the point he could literately kill a language.

He said that his world would be one that "Spoke a language of Metal Gears and Nukes" which sadly... he was successful to a degree. Anderson created a set of A.I.s that where meant to monitor and control the world via information/economy, The Patriots and if you played through MGS4, you know how well that went. (Hell, there are metal gears still kicking around in MGR Revengance)

What really freaked me out is that out of all the bad guys you battle against in the games, he was the one that felt the most human (I mean as in, his actions and desires where very close to certain real world dictators... the fact he referred to the Vocal Cord parasites as Ethnic Cleansers... *shudders*) and that in the end, he sort of won.

DARPER and Arm's tech eventually made something similar to Skullfaces Metal Gear, the Rex unit, that started a metal Gear arms race that hasn't ended. Metal Gears are still being used in MGR and that's set something like 40 years after the evens of The Phantom Pain.

---

So that's my talk... or more ramble about Metal Gear Solid V, I'm sort of sad that with Konami saying they are not going to do any more Triple A games that we won't see more of this setting, but if Konami ever goes belly up, maybe Kojima will get his hands back on the series?

Nah, at this rate, we can look forward to the adventures of Gel Mongoose in Alloy Cog Zero. Just like Mighty Number 9 and Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. :lol

I would pay for that on one condition.

It is as hammy/up right silly as Armstrong in MGR emoticon

It's funny. I've liked the plot in Metal Gear Solid, but Metal Gear Rising was the first Metal Gear game I beat myself. It was just fun. The fact there won't be a sequel saddens me.

....however, it means Raiden can probably finally get his happy ending, so.

Re: Seraph talks about MGS:V The Phantom Pain. (warning, spoilers)

So after finishing all the missions (I'm sitting at about 92% completion) I see feel I can list the pro's and cons of this game... but it doesn't feel like a Metal Gear Solid game and here is why.

1: Lack of cinematic.
The main part of a Metal Gear game is the long cinematic where you get massive plot dumps or the character telling about their past, motives and such, in Phantom Pain, they shove that all into optional cassets. You can listen to the Cassets at any time, but if you try to in a mission, the mission the mission Dialog will try to talk over the cassets.

2: Keither
I really have no idea why they used him over David Hayate, He probably cost a ton more, but says so little you could mistake the Boss for being mute, even in the rare cinematic he rarely says more than a few lines at a time. Maybe they wanted a different voice for Boss... but then why did they have David voice him in Snake Eater and Peace Walker?

3: lack of New Game +
This is the one that really bugs me, the best part of a MGS game was replaying it, with Snake in a James Bond Tux, using joke items/god cheat items to screw around and have fun.
But no, you can replay any mission, but you won't get certain cinematic and the Tux? We will get it.... as paid DLC.

4: The lack of Chapter 3.
Last we see of Eli, Liquid Snake, is him sitting in the cockpit of the Metal Gear, with all his child soldiers hanging off it as Psycho Mantis floats them off into the horizon.

Chapter 3 was the follow up, where Boss chases after them to a remote island where Liquid has used the Metal gear to set up his own little kingdom, but XOF want's their weapon back, so they assault the Island.

Boss went in, fighting XOF, then Liquid's Metal gear in what was planed to be a series of battles that end in Boss and the Diamond Dog's destroying the Metal Gear and killing the last of XOF.

This info was found when PC players mined the code, but Konami has no plans on actually giving us Chapter 3, not even as DLC, so we end the game with some hanging plot threads.

Finally, 5: Quite leaving.
Quite leaves the bass after Huey mutated the Vocal cord parasites to save the Boss's life, but is caught by Soviet soldiers.

Boss goes to save her, but then end up caught in a sand storm and Boss is bitten by a cobra, so to save him she speaks English to call in a choper, activating her vocal cord parasites...

but here is the thing.

One, she never talked, so she could of undergone the surgery to have her vocal cords removed and two, the parasites eat the hosts lungs.... but Quite has none cuz they got burnt out in the start of the game (and one of her maaaany parasites uses her skin to breath)... so how would the parasites of killed her or spread to others?

It feels more like they just ran out of story and just went "!@#$ it, kill her off"... that or her leaving was post Kojima leaving.

Watched the whole thing. I've seen some of that guy's videos before, and I like that, in an age when being an angry reviewer with a gimmick is the road to fame, he speaks in a calm and collected voice. He takes you through his whole thought process, so you can see how and why he's come to the conclusions that he has.

(I still love watching the AVGN, as he was pretty much the original angry reviewer.)

On the video itself, yeah, there's a lot of editorial manipulation in the game industry. It's been going on as long as there's been game journalists. I remember LJN once threatened GamePro to stop sending them free copies of their games for review and to stop buying ad space in their magazine, because they had given Total Recall a negative review. GamePro rebuked them, and said they'd just stop giving them free advertising in their magazine by reviewing their games at all then.

But it's a problem that's grown more complex as the industry has grown, and it's more prevalent than ever now.
