Has anyone sampled the subscription box phenomenon?

There seems to be one of those mystery subscription box services for just about everything these days....fashion & cosmetics, pet supplies, crafts, food, lingerie and so on. The "geek" boxes have become very popular with sites like NerdBlock, Lootcrate, Booty Bin and Comic Bento. Today a joint venture between Marvel and Funko was announced called Marvel Collector Corps which ships themed Marvel boxes every other month with guaranteed exclusive items. The first two are Age of Ultron and Ant-Man themes (what the hell can they fill and Ant-Man box with, I wonder?)

Has anyone ever tried one of these services? I never have since I'd rather spend my money on stuff I know I want rather than let someone pick out some crap I probably wouldn't buy otherwise, but I guess the whole "mystery" factor is what hooks people. However, this new Marvel box is including an exclusive Funko Pop figure of Hulkbuster Iron Man, so I may give it a shot.

I thought about signing up for the "loot crate" service. It's only 20 bucks a month, but it's just more junk I don't need.
It looks neat and they have youtube videos that show monthly boxes. I just don't have the 20 a month.

This nails it.

I've got LEGO over here releasing $350 SHIELD Hellicarriers, the last thing I need to be spending my collection money on is a box of stuff I might be mildly interested in as opposed to something I need or really want. I suppose something like this would be great for people with interests in these things, but no real targeted and deep hobbies. (if that makes any sense)

That actually makes perfect sense and in addition to the line that you quoted of Goji, this is the second reason why I don't do the sub box service. I've had to narrow my collecting down greatly due to money and room (TF Generations, MP, and 3 3/4 Spider-Man figures) and I don't need a bunch of random stuff sent to me every month I may or may not want and also don't need anything that will tempt me to collect anything else.

Agreed. This is the same reason I typically avoid figures that come with BaF pieces.

Someone talked my brother-in-law apparently into something like this, and from his Facebook posts, he doesn't seem particularly thrilled.

It'd be nice of there was an option of picking what genre, character, and type of collectible you'd like to get, but that takes away the mystery (and the ability for these companies to get rid of their unsold crap).
