Re: Castlevania series
Well damn, that sucks. Hopefully you get another chance soon. I was considering buying it off the psn, but money is a little right right now. Been replaying Lords of Shadow instead, getting all the secret stuff & beating it on the highest difficulty. I'm finding that, while I do enjoy it, I still prefer the 2D Castlevanias over the 3D ones.
On a related note, I watched a documentary about the real Dracula the other day. It was interesting, especially to see what his real fortresses & castles looked like. The true castle of Dracula looked more like a brick than an ornate gothic fantasy castle.

Re: Castlevania series
Bought Mirror of Fate a few days ago. Been having some fun with it. Very different from traditional 2D Castlevanias, with the focus more on combat than platforming (though there's a decent amount of platforming as well).
Taken out 2 bosses so far. Felt more like I was wailing away and button mashing, than looking for a pattern to expoit. Not bad, just different. Simon Belmont's new look is still absolutely ridiculous.

Re: Castlevania series
Finished the game at 100% last night. Got the bonus ending and everything. Had a whole lot of fun with this game. I still stand by my initial opinion, that it was better when the Belmonts weren't directly related to Dracula, but I enjoyed this new take as well. I'm okay with thinking of them as alternate realities.
I was commenting how this game is basically retelling CV 1 and 3 at the same time. You have Trevor Belmont's story, Sypha Belnades acting as a spirit protector for Simon, Alucard shows up. I was joking that all we need is for the pirate, Grant Danasty to show up, and lo and behold, I found a scroll on a corpse signed by none other than Danasty. Made me all giddy!
A worthy addition to my CV collection, though I prefer that Sypha and Grant get to play active roles in the adventure in the NES version of the story.

Re: Castlevania series
Last night I was playing Castlevania 2: Redaction. It's been a long time since I've played CV2 and I've never played all the way through the Redaction version. OMG it's so nice! The clues and text are so much more helpful. It changes the entire game from some cryptic riddle into a fair challenge! When I have kids, this is the version I'll have them play first before showing them what I got to grow up with.
Best moment: one of the villagers says, "Beware of the Graveyard Duck and the Graveyard Goose too!"
I was laughing out loud! I love that they poked a little fun at that clue from the original. The original clue says, "GET A SILK BAG FROM THE GRAVEYARD DUCK TO LIVE LONGER."
It's all in caps, so there's no indication of a new sentence starting. There's no punctuation, so it appears it's saying the Graveyard Duck will give you a silk bag. Somewhere in Castlevania is a duck that lives in the graveyard! And a goose too!
I did a 5 second search just now and came across this interesting article- apparently it's not a mistranslation! Apparently they really were talking about a Graveyard Duck!

Re: Castlevania series
Replayed Super Castlevania 4 on the SNES tonight. It was an all-day battle, but I did manage to break Drac's fangs again. Game is tough! But that's probably more due to my being out of practice. Some of the platforming challenges in the later levels really tested my skill.
But I have to say, this game really earns its reputation as one of the single greatest CV games in the series. From the moment you turn the power on, the atmosphere and mood the game sets is good and eerie. The bosses are of the more traditional monster variety like the mummy, medusa, a waltzing pair of ghosts, and a classic demon than the crazier, more imaginative stuff seen in later sequels. But again, I feel like this was aiming at creating a classic, gothic horror vibe like you'd get from old black and white Universal or Hammer Horror movies. And it works perfectly. Also keeping with that tone, Dracula doesn't have any other forms in this game, which I think is a first for him. The game tried to keep things a little classier this time out, and I like it.
The game really does feature the best control of all the classic CV games. It kind of blows my mind that CV Bloodlines and Rondo of Blood went back to an older control scheme despite being made afterwards. And I'm not talking about just the 8-way whipping. The ability to control Simon in mid-jump, crouch and walk, swing from the whip, and using the free shoulder buttons to throw special weapons are all features gone from later games. It's a shame.
Also- for our 1 year anniverary presents, I got my wife Zelda: Twilight Princess HD and she got me Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2. Should be good!!

Re: Castlevania series
Beat Lords of Shadow 2. The gameplay was fine. Nothing wrong there. The story kind of fell down though. The whole thrust of the narrative was that Dracula was apparently wanting to end his immortal existence, but couldn't, because Satan would still be waiting for him on the other side.
So he and Alucard concoct this centuries-spanning plan to lure Satan and his followers out, and then stomp them all into oblivion. Cool, cool. But after killing Satan, Drac merely tells Alucard to come inside before the sun rises.
Sooo. . . .
Huh? Did I miss something?
Totally anti-climatic. Almost feels like a cheap cliffhanger ending. Do I have to buy the Revelations DLC to get the true ending or something?

I haven't gotten around to playing the second one yet, but yea, the first one, the "true" ending was locked in the DLC, so it wouldn't surprise me. But yea, that sounds very weak sauce.

Yeah. I watched the cut-scenes from the DLC on youtube. I wasn't especially in the mood to drop cash for the real ending (for part 1). Considering that this is the guy that's supposed to become Dracula, it was absolutely boneheaded to leave out what is arguably the most important part of the story and making people pay for it. Stupid.
I did a little checking on part 2, and it looks like the ending seen in the game is the only ending. Just super vague and anti-climatic. I did come across an interview with the game's director, where he stated that Dracula would live on and become a benevolent dictator, ruling over the entire planet. Again, completely ridiculous. Nothing is ever alluded to him wanting to rule any longer. The whole story is about him wanting to die, not live on as a world conqueror. I just tossed that nonsense into the waste bin.

Re: Castlevania series
I'll pick it up if i see it cheap. My experience with the first game was I got my money's worth (off the clearance racks), and I feel that'd be true of 2 as well. Sounds like the dev team/higher ups had some differences of opinion if that's how it shook out. Given all the issues with Konami as of late, that wouldn't surprise me at all.

Totally. I could see them wanting to make a solid CV trilogy and end it with Dracula being laid to rest for all time, only for Konami to rush in and say, "But wait! There might be more money to be made! Leave it open-ended!"
