To be fair XP has been around for the better part of a decade. Microsoft will continue to support it till april 2014.
You got some time.
October 25, 2011. So, coming up on 12 years.
But yeah, no reason to panic quite yet. Just be looking at new computers and off it by April. Scuttlebutt is that the scum bags behind all the malware are hoarding their good XP exploits until after support ends. At that point, they'll be able to use those exploits indefinitely since Microsoft won't patch them. That's why I said "open season on XP users".
I don't begrudge Microsoft this. XP got drug out longer than they even wanted thanks to the debacle over Vista. Now Vista and 7 are no longer even the current OS, and it's time for XP to die. Apple doesn't even support OS X 10.5 and that came out in '07.
I don't know what kind of PC you're on, but if it's any kind of half decent Core 2 Duo or better, and you've got 4GB or more of RAM, you could just toss Win 7 on that. My PC that I use to play STO is a 2.8 (or 2.9?) GHz Core 2 Duo with 4GB of RAM and Win 7.

Re: Audio help
Well, if it's a 13 year old computer, odds are it probably maxed out at about a gig of ram.

Re: Audio help
That's the thing though. XP was sold through 2008. The computer could be as little as 5 years old, placing it solidly in the range of machines 7 could run on. Remember, people HATED Vista, and MS was basically forced to continue selling XP through most of Vista's run. I think it only really stopped once 7 came out in 2009 (there were still ways of buying XP even after Microsoft cut it off).

And there's still the matter of a fried sound card. Odds are, it'd be simpler (maybe cheaper too) to just replace the whole thing.

Re: Audio help
Oh, I thought you had figured that out. Yeah, might as well get a new one then. If you aren't down with Win 8, it looks like you can still get ones with 7.

Re: Audio help
I've got a few friends using 8, and while some of its design doesn't seem the most user friendly or intuitive, I've basically got it figured out. Basically . . .

Re: Audio help
I have been using 8 since launch cause it was 40 bucks. It is definitely designed for a touchscreen., but with the 8.1 update hitting in October it does return some more of the windows-ness to 8. If you use the desktop and ignore the tiles for the most part, it's a really nice OS. It's 7 but tweaked and optimized. Pretty damn fast as well. 7 is still a good option as well. 8 isn't the plague that people make it out to be.
