General Metroid chit chat

Three days ago I bought Metroid: Zero Mission on the DS. Today I beat it on the normal setting. Game is hella' fun! I've only ever played the original Metroid on the NES, and that game is a beast to slog through. I don't know why I have such a fondness for the Metroid series based on having played only that game, but I'm glad I do, because Zero Mission takes everything that drove me crazy about the original and makes it FUN! The remixed tunes are excellent, the improved graphics really break up the monotony of the original, there's more boss fights, better boss fights, cinematics, new gameplay techniques like the ability to grab onto ledges and climb up. Little things that make everything a joy to play. Oh, and possibly the biggest improvement- there's a map!! I could spend days, months even wandering aimlessly in the original Metroid. I never had a map! Thankfully the remake comes with one built in. Makes my life so much easier. This really is a great game and a great remake of the original. I'm going to go out and pick up Metroid: Fusion next. This game has justified all those years of loving the tortuous original. :D

I recall playing Zero Mission back when I did my study abroad in Kyoto and remember being really disappointed by the last boss battle. It was one of those "that's it?" moments and was really underwhelming I though. The thing didn't even look imposing like say, Mother Brain did.

Gundam and Kamen Rider, two flavors that taste great together.

Haven't beaten Zero Mission, but I really hope that they don't give the next game to Team Ninja again.

While the controls were sort of so-so, Other M was just....awful. The storyline picks up plot points from the barely passable Metroid Fusion (Fun game, but the storyline was just....enh-ish) and makes it worse, and they managed to make me want the old "you lose all your upgrades and have to start over" functionality back because IT MADE MORE SENSE.

Other M was ok, the worse part was the fact that Samus said "The baby" every other damn word.

I liked how the combat worked in Other M. I enjoyed the fact that you had to really have your !@#$ together, or even relatively weaker enemies might do you serious damage. It added to the sense of tension and danger that you're in a very hostile environment. I did, however get sick of getting locked in rooms I'd already cleared until I beat the ambush parties. Also, having to switch to first person and being unable to move to shoot a missile was stupid. That whole first person thing only existed to justify it as a Wii game. Also, constantly being restricted artificially to where I could go was annoying.

The story was pretty dumb. Why does she give a !@#$ what this Adam asshole says? I wanted to punch him square in the balls. If he would have just let you use your upgrades from the start, that mission could've been done in an hour. Also, her being afraid of Ridley was ridiculous. She'd already killed his ass what, three or four times?

I did like the ties back to Super Metroid, especially the recap of its final battle from the beginning of the game. Super Metroid was the !@#$.

Yeah, there is that. Metal Ridley was a complete pushover. I did like that they added on one more bonus level after Mother Brain. That was cool in the sense that they weren't just calling it good where the original game would've ended. They really did go all out for it. So that one easy boss fight aside, the game is still awesome.

Haven't ever played Other M, but I've heard all about the weak storyline and Adam restricting Samus' upgrades and all that BS. The thing that kills it for me more than anything is how Samus is portrayed as this sombre, boring person. When we didn't have any cut-scenes or spoken dialogue to define the character, I had always imagined her to be quite the badass with a more extroverted personality than that. I swear, she's smiling in every ending. She never struck me as the emo type that Other M portrays her as. I've heard that the Prime series is pretty good though. I just don't know if I can handle my Metroid in 3D though. :P

That's pretty much what drives everybody nuts. She's practically the savior of the entire galaxy, and yet she still takes orders from this douche? They should worship the ground she walks on, and better yet get the !@#$ out of the way and let her work.

I was actually a little let down by the whole map system they have in Zero Mission. One of the things I loved about Metroid was that you literally had no idea what the hell you were supposed to do, until you did it. It was all about exploration and retraversing the different parts of Zebes. Unless you had those Nintendo Power guides back then, you really were never going to find where all the hidden things were unless you poured over every inch of the game.

Zero Missions, however... I dunno... it held your hand too much in telling you where you needed to go next. I think it kind of lost some of the novelty in doing so. One thing a Metroid game shouldn't do is tell you what your next move needs to be. It's all about discovering it on your own and being amazed.

I actually liked Fusion quite a bit though. The evil Samus is a little creepy.

And as stated above, Super Metroid is awesome. It's my second favorite game of all time. Definitely check if out if you've never played the game before. It took all the good elements from Metroid and made it a billion times more awesome.

The worst part of the Prime games IMO, were the controls. The fact when you used the Wii mote to look around. I would move it, then move back cause i would always loose the senor bar. Then wave it around to re-establish the signal. I played about an hour and a half and got fed up with it. That and the fact that you had to scan damn near everything in the game.

I'm allowed to use the map though, since I beat the original without it. :D OMG though, the original just frustrated the hell out of me to the point where I was no longer enjoying it, and just raging at the TV instead. I'm all for a little exploration, and backtracking, but half the time I had no idea where I even was or if I was covering new ground or retreading old ground. For the purist at heart, I guess you could always opt to not check the map in Zero Mission.
