Prince Caspian

Saw this this evening, and was very impressed for a few reasons.

- As I expected, the plot is MUCH less sledgehammerishly obvious about the allegorical points. For those of you that were put off by the "Aslan died for your sins" blatancy of the first film, Caspian doesn't have anything like that.

- The Telmarines got much more character than in the books, with Miraz starting out as "Lord Protector" rather than the usurper king of the novels, and only getting the political support to be crowned king after the failed invasion of the Telmarine castle by Narnians led by Caspian(thus proving his claim that Caspian seeks to dethrone Telmar). They also get a very strong Conquistadorish vibe in terms of their look, accent, and costuming, but not an overwhelming one.

- As the director put it, the actual book is "one long walk and a short battle". The movie alters this by having the four kids involved in the war against Telmar much earlier, including an entirely new battle(that serves to point out Peter's characterization more openly) in Miraz's castle, followed by a more expanded version of the final battle.

- The summoning of the White Witch is an event only talked about hypothetically in the books, but here it is actually done, however temporarily, resulting in a rather effective cameo.

- Mass army scenes and actual tactics during the final battle are given a bigger view, resulting in a much more impressive final battle than the previous movie's.

- Trumpkin the dwarf is given a much larger sarcastic streak, making him a shoe in for one of the more popular supporting characters compared to the one-note skeptic he is in the books.

- Reepicheep the mouse is absolutely perfect, and voiced by Eddie Izzard no less.

All in all, I often think that the books and movies are different beasts and thus one is not necessarily better than the other. In this case, I don't think so. The filmers have actually made the movie BETTER than the book was, in my opinion, and it's definitely worth seeing.

Re: Prince Caspian

I couldn't pick up on all the changes, since I haven't read the books in 15 years. Interesting that whole botched castle assault was added in, that was one of the better parts. I do still feel like the movies are a bit too long. After all, these are much shorter books than the LotR novels (though there are more of them). Also, those main kids still can't act. There's only so much a British accent can do to hide the fact that you can't emote.
