Final Fantasy Seven Remake. An entire hardware generation after the teaser trailer, my wildest gaming dream, the one and only remake I've ever really wanted is finally real.
I am buying the specialist of special editions of this thing.
Re: Final Fantasy Seven Remake. This is something I should be pretty stoked about, but it's really up in air, as far as I'm concerned.
One of the biggest games ever, getting a modern remake, sounds cool. It'll probably look cool. But you just KNOW someone's going to try and say, "do we need this? Can we change the story a little? Can Tifa be a nudist?" That's to say nothing of how they'll use DLC to make things more aggravating. Someone will think this or that needs to be changed, "modernized" or made "hip" in hopes of appealing to people who won't buy it anyway.
It sounds cool, and I hope it is cool. If it's something like the Re-Shelled game, or the HD collections for Ratchet & Clank or Jak & Daxter, where the story is the same, the characters are unchanged, but they bumped the graphics up a few notches, that'll be good.
Re: Final Fantasy Seven Remake. I'm cautiously optimistic. I'd love for it to be perfect, but I'm a nitpicker (as we all know here :lol)
But, when it comes to remakes and changes, I'm going to paraphrase Victor Ireland of late, great, Working Designs fame on the Lunar: Silver Star Complete remake.
It's like a myth, told over a campfire. Different storytellers tell it differently, remember events differently, maybe focus on different aspects a little stronger. But as long as it remains true to the heart of the story, it'll be good.
It's up to the listener to decide which version they like better.
The one and only REAL concern I have is the battle system. I hope they keep it as a traditional FF game and not the real-time, AI party fests that were 12 and 13.
Re: Final Fantasy Seven Remake. I'd hope they handle it like they have all the other FF and DQ remakes. Keep the story and core game mechanics the same, overhaul the graphics, and clean up/modernize any of the clunkier parts of the UI.
My GF loves FF, and of course this game in particular, but I was never able to sit through it. Even when the Playstation was current, I could not stand looking at its 3D games (its sprite games were great). I could grit my teeth and get through N64 games, but the PS1 was like loosely associated heaps of geometric shapes. I'm excited to play this game in a format I can stand to look at.
Unfortunately, no gameplay footage and no release date means who knows when this will actually materialize.
Re: Final Fantasy Seven Remake. I dunno, I kind of dug 12's combat style, where your characters could be queued for stuff at once.
The big problem I had with 13's (which I still haven't gotten around to beating) is how the leader's death means game over. Challenging, but just teetering on annoying.

Which sadly, they fixed on XIII-2 (If you die, it switches to another party member automatically), but XIII-2 wasn't nearly as fun a game for me as XIII was.

Yep. This in a nutshell is exactly what I want.

I agree the Macro system was really well done from a technical perspective, but it just felt like once you set up some proper scripting, the game essentially played itself.
13 has a slew of problems, but I also don't feel the game is as bad as people make it out to be. If it didn't have the name Final Fantasy it wouldn't get the criticism it does.

This. I had a lot of fun with FFXIII, but people haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaated it for the fact that it dared to have the Final Fantasy name in front of it. Whereas I enjoyed the hell out of it for having a fairly straightforward plot without a lot of side exploration that I'd be screwed by if I just followed the storyline.
And seriously, the first fight with Barthandelus and the final boss are both epic. If you judge a game by how much I enjoyed myself playing it, FFXIII succeeded with me in spades, regardless of whether it "deserves" to be a FF game or not.
I'm still a little leery about the more modern combat system (it looks like it's based on 15, which doesn't shock me at all). I'm sure it'll hold up just fine with the regular battles but I'm wondering how the BIG stuff (Bizzaro and Safer Sephiroth, the WEAPONS) will work with it. But, I'm willing to admit I get that turn based battles in a AAA game is.. not what people want these days even if it's what *I* want, so I'll not hate it. The game holds its nostaliga for the world and the story and the characters, not me watching Bahamut Zero for 15 minutes.
But it looks, sounds, and feels like FF7. The music is right, the art is right, the voices for the Avalanche guys (and Jesse, who's even more adorable now they sprung for actual character models :P) sound "right" compared to how they have in my head for 20 years, CLOUD IS DRESSED CORRECTLY AND NOT A MOPEY !@#$.
And it's instantly recognizable. I know EXACTLY what each of those scenes was (Love that they scaled up the post terror attack when they surround you on the bridge into an entire !@#$ PLATOON of Shin-ra troopers instead of the like, 7 guys the poor PS1 could handle :lol). And the Guard Scorpion looks amazing.
Also, loved the little bonus nod of right before he shows up, the camera pans around - that is a beautiful little node to the battle intros from the original game. Touches like that make me think they will do it right.
But yea. I'm stoked. Can't wait. Yes please.
...also, is it just me or does Barret kinda look like Blade (the Wesley Snipes version) now? :lol
