TF:G Thunderwing Review (Pics soon)
Thunderwing
Once again, the storm bringer Thunderwing graces toy shelves! This time around, he has shed the pretender shell and is one whole robot.
vehicle mode
Thunderwing's vehicle form is listed as a stealth jet. He looks more like a heavily modified concord to me but that doesn't take away from him since the overall shape is still similar to his G1 robot and shell combined jet mode. The guns attached to the wings add to his fire power. At first, I thought his vehicle mode was rather squat looking but it works very well. A little surprise I didn't know until I got him was that the front of the nose cone can seperate into a jet drone. The best part about this is the drone is very similar to G1's inner robot's jet mode. A nice little touch.
transformation
To transform, slide the wings out and fold back the cockpit to the back. Open the chest piece and fold out the legs, fold out feet, and close chest piece. The chest plate slides down revealing Thunderwing's terrifying countenance.
Robot mode
Thunderwing's robot mode hearkens back to his G1 days. Robot mode looks 99% the same as G1 with the exception of a scaled head, wings, and articulation. The guns can stay attached to the wings or be removed and attached to his hands. Even the wings can stay out and folded back. He has a wide ranger of articulation and can pose in a variety of poses.** A 99% improvement of G1 (unless you're bummed he doesn't have an inner robot).
The only drawback is that with a character such as Thunderwing, he really needed to be voyager sized figure. However, don't let size fool you. Thunderwing is a great toy. Based on the different head in the instructions, I only hope Hasbro has the sense to repaint him as Black Shadow.
**Update
Something I found out after posting this is the shoulder attachments, which double as laser cannons in jet mode. This attachments make it impossible for him to raise his arms. Still an improvement over G1, but I have to edit my review from 4.5 to 4 for that.

Iacon, I wasn't going to read your review until the pictures were up, but I did notice the 4-Spidey rating, so when I saw him in Target I didn't hesitate.
He's not the best Deluxe I've bought recently, but...f##k it, THUNDERWING! :crazy

I won't lie... As soon as I get mine, I'll do it too. (I might use a different Matrix though! Maybe the Masterpiece Prime one.)

Go for it and use the Masterpiece one. I'll use the Movie Matrix that came with the recent Movie Prime toy. :P

Just saw this wave, passed on all of them. I was never enamored with the character of Thunderwing and his jet mode design reminds me of a Playskool Transformer. I'll wait to see if I like the (assumed) Black Shadow repaint better.
